Nearly half of Microsoft 2010 security patches have known problems

Nearly half of Microsoft 2010 security patches have known problems

Last month's fix of a broken Windows Server patch got me thinking -- just how often does Microsoft release a patch that it knows has problems? The answer: nearly half the time. How often are those problems so severe they fry your system? That's less clear, but it seems as if the answer is, "not all that often."

Microsoft patches with known problemsMicrosoft MCTS Training has so far released 45 updates in 2010, some fixing multiple vulnerabilities. Of them, 20 were released with a known problem (see list below) but of those, only two had issues severe enough to warrant a fix and re-release of the patch altogether. Those two patches were MS10-024 and MS10-025. Both were originally released during April's patch cycle. 024 was re-released in July after users began reporting that the patch hosed their systems and that Microsoft's workarounds didn't work. 025, also originally released in the April Patch Tuesday, was re-released two weeks later.

"The [025] bulletin was rated critical and affected Windows Media Services. On April 21st, Microsoft pulled the bulletin from their webpage as they found the patch did not fully fix the vulnerability as intended. On April 27th, Microsoft re-released the bulletin as it addressed the vulnerability as originally intended. With this bulletin, this had a pretty low impact on administrators as it only affected Windows 2000 SP4 with Windows Media Services installed. This service is not installed by default, so this type of software scenario is typically quite rare," explains Jason Miller, data and security team manager for patch management vendor, Shavlik Technologies, Minneapolis.

The number of re-releases isn't a good indicator of how many bulletins hose a users's systems. As Miller notes, each bulletin may fix multiple vulnerabilities and if Microsoft changes one patch, it may not re-release the whole bulletin. Users might get a cumulative patch bulletin for the product (common for Internet Explorer, for instance). One would assume that these new fixes are rolled into the next service pack, too.

Additionally, Microsoft will re-release a bulletin not because the patch is faulty but because it is updating the list of software known to be affected (usually adding, not subtracting) or because Windows Update is just plain confused. "There are cases where a patch will be detected as missing when it is actually installed. Microsoft MCTS Certification has made changes to patches addressing these detection and deployment issues. If the patch has already been applied, no action is required by the administrator as the vulnerability has been fixed," Miller adds.

Still, I wanted some measure of how many patches cause problems. So I counted the number of bulletins released in 2010 with stated known issues. This doesn't indicate how badly these issues might affect the performance of the machine it was meant to fix. For instance, below is the known issue and its fix for MS10-040, a June patch rated "important" that fixes a hole in IIS.

Microsoft fourth quarter boosted by Office Windows sales

Microsoft fourth quarter boosted by Office Windows sales

The release of Office 2010, as well as continued strong sales of Windows 7, helped buoy Microsoft MCTS Training through another quarter of increased revenue and profit, the company announced on Thursday.

The company announced that net income for the quarter, which ended June 30, was US$5.93 billion, an increase of 49 percent over the same quarter a year prior.

Fourth-quarter revenue of $16.04 billion was a 22 percent increase from the fourth quarter in the previous year, which was at $13.10 billion. Earnings per share for the most recent quarter were $0.51, a 50 percent increase.

Microsoft attributed much of the sales growth in the past quarter to Microsoft Office, launched during this quarter, as well as continued strong sales of Windows 7. The company noted that Windows 7 has sold more than 175 million licenses since it was launched last October.

How do you deal with email spam & at the same time save money for your business?

How do you deal with email spam & at the same time save money for your business?
We all receive irritating spam emails but did you know that there are billions of spam emails sent every day? Not only are they irritating but they also potentially carry damaging attachments that can cause problems for your business.

There is also another aspect that’s an issue for small businesses and that’s the amount of time wasted dealing with spam. Have you ever considered how the minutes add up and cost your business?

By way of an example we were talking to one client about the amount of spam they received. When the client had considered the interruption time, opening the email, briefly reading it, deleting the email and moving on to the next one they estimated that on average an employee spent 15 minutes spread throughout the day dealing with spam emails.

On the face of it 15 minutes a day is not much, but if we assume that a member of staff works for 43 weeks a year then they waste a approximately 1.5 weeks a year. When they then multiplied that by the number of staff they found that approx 13 weeks a year where lost on dealing with spam emails! It was even more frightening when they calculated the cost of lost time!

If this where your business what would you give to have an extra 13 weeks available to progress the business? Especially, as you’re already paying for them!

So it’s worth considering how much time you and your employees spend dealing with spam emails. Depending on what software you use this may be a small or large figure. Don’t forget to apply an hourly or daily charge rate Microsoft MCTS Training.

With the right solution in place you can claim back time that belongs to your business and at the same time protect your business from viruses etc.

One of the most effective solutions we’ve found is the use of ‘offsite’ spam filtering. The right offline partner will stop over 98% of spam getting through to you. You also don’t have to worry about legitimate emails being stopped as you have control to release stopped emails Microsoft MCITP Certification.

An additional benefit is that your broadband connection has less traffic, and your PC and/or server will be under less strain.

Successful Direct Mail Marketing

Successful Direct Mail Marketing
For those who start up a new business, marketing and advertising can seem almost like a foreign concept. It’s not always easy to find a marketing technique for your service or product that your business is trying to sell. What may work for one business won’t necessarily work for another. There are many options such as flyers, newspaper advertisements, infomercials, and many other forms of advertising that can be extremely expensive and might not be right for your business. One type of marketing that has proven results is direct mail marketing. If you are not familiar with what direct mail marketing is, it is a very common type of direct marketing that many businesses use to reach out to their existing and potential customers. This is not a new technique by any means; it has been used for years so it has been proven to be quite efficient.

Direct mail marketing is a lot like the name implies; you market your business directly to customers or potential customers with the use of postcards or letters. This isn’t simply a drive from house to house marketing technique in which you shove advertisements in people’s doors, but a professional means of advertisement that will help get your newly emerging business noticed or pump up your already existing business with new customers. Before you just start mailing out letters or postcards to every house in your area, there are a few things to know in order to make the most of your direct mail marketing campaign Microsoft MCTS Training.

First of all you really need to have a great product or service that you can market. Next comes finding a way to position your product or service that will make it interesting to customers. Once you have that figured out then you need to decide what medium you are going to use; letter or postcards. This decision will have a lot of impact on how successful your marketing campaign will be. It might be wise to do a little research into your community to see what catches the attention of potential customers better. After you have made a decision you just need to have your letter or postcard designed in an attractive and eye catching manner that is sure to get your business going. After everything has been printed out you need to do a little more research and find the best demographic area that you should target your direct mail marketing efforts. Once you have a specific area targeted you need to develop some sort of mailing list Microsoft MCITP Certification.

If you have chosen to send out a letter instead of a postcard you will have another step to follow before it can be mailed out. You need to decide what exactly you are going to include with the letter in order to get the attention of customers such as coupons, incentives, or any other inserts you wish to include for your business. Remember that whatever you are sending out needs to grab the attention of the customer so they don’t simply throw your efforts in the trash. After all is done you just have to take note and watch your response rate, then repeat again with any improvements that you can think of.

Working With Files in Linux: Kludges and Solutions

Working With Files in Linux: Kludges and Solutions
A year ago, I made the best and worst mistake of my life: I messed up my GRUB boot list, and didn’t have the wherewithal to fix it. I was so frustrated, that I chose to abandon the Microsoft axis altogether. What would I do without the tools I used in Windows? I found myself relying on some very helpful roundups online. You know “The 5 best apps for this or that”, and the like.

It turns out, after you read 50 or so Linux roundups that don’t help you at all, you find one shining program( or solution )in the rough that takes care of your issues. Sometimes, you end up using a combination of programs together, with varying degrees of success. Then, you have the “kludge”. This is a programming term that basically means ” an inefficient, clumsy way to get the result you want”. I have plenty of those, and have detailed a few of my favorites below.

I’m not saying that you will see much of a difference in the programs I suggest in this roundup. Depending on how new you are to the Linux scene, you might stumble onto something you aren’t currently using. What I will offer are unique and occasionally “kludgey” solutions to get the job done.

PDF’s: These gave me a real problem when I started using Linux full-time. Don’t get me wrong, Linux has plenty of PDF readers/writers. When it came to editing them all, I hit a bit of a roadblock. I have to amend PDF’s(photo and text-based) on a regular basis. So what are the solutions I found?

- PDFedit: This is okay, provided you are satisfied with having a one-shot edit. By that, I mean that you can access the document and change it, but it does not have an “undo” function. Hopefully, they will add this feature in future. You have to close the document in order to “undo” any changes. I only use this for highlighting text based PDF’s. For image based PDF’s I choose…

- GIMP(a kludgin’ we will go): Yes, that’s right. The venerated Photoshop replacement can edit text and image-based PDF’s. There are several issues with this method, but I’ll explain how to use it, should you be so inclined. The downfall of this method is that GIMP imports the PDF, whether Image or Text based as an Image. When it exports, it exports the file independently of the original as a PDF. That being said, it is a good solution for 1-3 page docs. All you have to do is create a new layer in Gimp, cover up the old information with a color( I use white, generally) and create a new text layer to replace the old data Microsoft MCTS Training. Then export as a .jpg or .png (I generally use .jpg, but .gif works pretty well, should you need a smaller file size.)

Here comes the fun part: Now, you have to open up the other PDF pages in GIMP, and export them as a .jpg or whatever. Then, open up OpenOffice Draw. Insert the picture into the first slide. Insert another slide, insert pic. Repeat until done. Click “Export as PDF” button. Tada. Not fun. Or you can just write a PHP script to run on your Apache server, and use the PHP/PDF library to export your files as a single PDF(if you feel froggy, jump.) I hired someone to write a short script for me, and they were among the best dollars I have ever spent.

- Scribus: This is the most mature of the editing/publishing platforms out there. I have heard great things about its ability to edit PDF’s. The only problem is, I cannot get it edit a single PDF. It tells me that my PDF’s are not in an acceptable format. Should they fix this in a later release, this would be your best shot at a editing on a great platform. It just does not work with PDF’s generated in OpenOffice, or anywhere else for that matter.

- Xournal or Gournal: Xournal is the better of the two. They are both lightweight PDF annotators/editors. They do not work well with Image based PDF’s. They do an admirable job when dealing with text based PDF’s.

Let’s move on to picture formats, and photo management systems. Man, have I ever had a problem with these. This mostly has to do with the frequent inability of Linux programs to understand layers, as they relate to Adobe based products.

The following programs allow you to view, and even batch process photos. These are the ones that will save you more time than any other Microsoft MCITP Certification.

- Phatch: The single greatest contribution to Open Source photo editing since GIMP. Phatch allows you to quickly and easily batch edit thousands of files at the time. A simple GUI makes this a snap. Resize, change file quality parameters, rename, rotate, drop shadow, etc., without ever seeing the command line.

- Inkscape: A vector editor that comes close to accurately opening .ai and layered .eps files. I say, comes close, because it picks and chooses which of these files it interprets. It’s Russian Roulette. I wouldn’t pay for a vector graphics package based on its performance, unless it gives you the file in .svg, which it interprets without a problem.

- GIMP: Okay, if you don’t know already, GIMP is the app that started it all. You can open up pretty much anything in GIMP. It just works. There are enough scripts and tutorials out there that enable you to do anything you want with an image. Its batch processing abilities are not nearly as good as Phatch, but you can add “Dave’s Batch Processor” should you feel the urge.

(For all of you who say “Well, you can use Adobe products with WINE.”, let me remind you that I am not dual-booting MS and Linux. To speak of a solution using WINE would nullify the point of this article.)

Ok, now that I am done with programs, I’d like to share with you some websites that help you convert files into usable formats. You know the ones, the primarily brilliant spawn of Microsoft that are a pain to open: .docx, .xlsx, .pub, and anything else you need decoded on the fly.

(It should be noted that current Linux versions of OpenOffice will open .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx locally. Windows versions of the program do not support these files as of yet.) These are for when you are on the go, or using a machine that isn’t owned by you. You could always carry a custom distro on your keychain, but my guess is you are not that hardcore yet. If you are, you have probably discovered or coded far better solutions than I am offering.

- k2pdf.com : This will take .rtf, .txt, .doc, .eps, .docx, .mdi, .tif, and a few other formats, and convert them into a usable, viewable PDF for you.

- pdfonline.com- Should you need the document editable in word, head over here to convert your PDF to a standard MS Word file. The only reason that you would possibly need this, is to edit tables from an .xlsx to PDF conversion. Still, a reasonably decent kludge.

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/access_onlinetools.html- Yup. Adobe offers to convert your PDF to HTML for you here. You take the help where you can get it. Then you can paste the HTML into OpenOffice and save as .doc (or preferably, an .odt.) Again, not the greatest solution, but one that works.

The Linux community is doing an admirable job of making file formats accessible. Hopefully, in the near future, an open standard will overtake these proprietary formats. In the meantime, I hope some of these patched together solutions will help you get the job.

I have paperwork to do, so I’ve gotta run. The penguin shall prevail…

Welcome to the new Support Lifecycle blog!

Welcome to the new Support Lifecycle blog!
Welcome to the new home of the Microsoft Support Lifecycle blog. For those of you who are not familiar, the Microsoft Support Lifecycle is the set of policies that governs the length of support for all Microsoft products. Or, as described by our website, "provides consistent and predictable guidelines for product support availability when a product releases and throughout that product’s life". The goal of this blog is not to replace the main http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle website as the authoritative source for information on the policy. Instead, our goal is to use this blog as an informal communication mechanism to supplement the site and answer some of the common questions we receive MCTS Training, MCITP Certification .

Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Everything you always wanted to know about Extended Hotfix Support

Everything you always wanted to know about Extended Hotfix Support for Daylight Saving Time enrollment but were afraid to ask!

The Microsoft Support Lifecycle team gets lots of questions about Extended Hotfix Support for Daylight Saving Time (EHS for DST). Although this offering was initiated in 2007, there still seems to be some confusion around its purpose and how to obtain it.

In an earlier post we talked about Extended Hotfix Support and its purpose: a program that provides customers with the ability to request non-security hotfixes for products in the Extended Support phase of the lifecycle. EHS for DST is slightly different, but related.

What is the history behind Extended Hotfix Support for Daylight Saving Time? Daylight Saving time (DST), and "Summer Time" in much of Europe, is the practice of moving local time forward one hour in the spring and backwards in the autumn. These spring and fall shifts to DST are different between northern and southern hemispheres. The start of DST in the northern hemisphere is in March or April (depending on the country/continent), and ending in October or November. In the southern hemisphere, the changes are the opposite, with DST beginning in October and ending in March or April. Generally, DST is not observed in Asia and Africa, and parts of Central and South America. Unless certain updates are applied to your computer, the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four-week period. In particular, you must make sure that both your Windows operating system and your calendar programs are updated.

Daylight Saving Time hotfixes can be applied to your computer to correct the time zone settings that get “out of synch” because of the DST time changes; and are available for products in the Mainstream phase of the lifecycle free of charge. To obtain DST hotfixes for products in the Extended Support phase, customers must purchase Extended Hotfix Support for Daylight Saving Time. EHS for DST entitles them to receive daylight saving time hotfixes for all affected products in the Extended Support phase. The cost is $4,000 USD and the program is open to all Microsoft MCTS Training customers. A list of affected products is available here.

COMMON QUESTIONS:

When will my Extended Hotfix Support for DST contract expire?

All EHS DST support contracts expire on the 31st of December of the calendar year, so any contract signed during 2008 will expire on December 31, 2008.

After I enroll, how do I get the hotfixes?

Once you enroll you will receive access to the Microsoft Connect web site where you can download the appropriate updates.

My company purchased a Extended Hotfix Support for DST contract in October 2007. I thought the contract was good for 12 months. Do I have to purchase another contract to receive 2008 DST updates?

Your contract ended on December 31, 2007. EHS for DST contracts signed on or after January 1, 2008 will end on the 31st of December of the calendar year in which the contract commences; so you must purchase another contract for 2008.

Shed stealth and start communicating

Shed stealth and start communicating
Bill Gates had once famously said, “If I was down to my last dollar, I’d spend it on public relations.” Rohit Gupta, co-founder and director, Pragma Communication, agrees and stresses the point that tech firms need to have a sound PR policy in place to succeed today.

What are the communication needs of a tech firm? How important is public relations (PR) in addressing these needs?

The technology landscape has changed over a period of time and has become extremely complex.

A few years ago, good technologies and good products could stand out on their own. But in the current scenario, communication can definitely serve as a competent marketing aid, targeted at keeping things simple, enabling information to be conveyed to interest groups at the right time, and helping differentiate products.

The need for communication is also driven by the business needs the firms may have from time to time. Lobbying or influencing industry bodies may be an active consideration for some who are involved in infrastructure related technologies, like 3G networking. Similarly, companies need to liaison with investors of all kinds. It is important that they keep these agencies posted on the well-being and future prospects of the company and also update them regularly on its returns. Communication plays a key role in establishing and nurturing this relationship.

The need for communication also arises because technology firms are bogged down by high attrition rates and employee churn. There exists an acute requirement for human resources. {quotes}PR can play a vital role in indirectly building employee loyalty and enhancing retention, as well as attracting potential employees towards the technology or the brand.{/quotes}

Recently, a business newspaper reported that owing to the recession, tech firms now have very small marketing budgets, and they prefer to spend it on PR rather than advertising. Could you comment on why this is so? However, FMCG companies like Wills Lifestyle, for instance, might prefer to spend on advertising. Why is the case different for a company in the tech space?

PR and advertising have their respective strengths and weaknesses. These are two parallel forms of communication and act most often as complimentary tools, having a common aim, which is strengthening the brand image and consequently, the net increase in revenue. Choosing between the two depends on what is being communicated and the desired effect that is being aimed at.

I do not believe that there is a difference, with respect to communication methods, between tech companies and FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) companies. The difference, as I see it, lies between the communicating entity and its communication needs at a specific moment.

Wills Lifestyle, for example, is part of the ITC Group and the communication needs for the two entities are different. For Wills Lifestyle, in the given market scenario (when the marketing spends are shrinking) it becomes imperative to maintain focus on communication that directly enables revenue. It would want its goods to move—the more it cycles its shelf-space, the higher will be the returns. Here the need for communication is targeted towards pushing sales. Thus, advertising fits the bill. It is a form of direct communication and allows companies to communicate on a pure marketing basis Microsoft MCTS Training.

However, ITC as a group has a larger role to play. It needs to communicate not only the health of the group but also about group strategies, along with the measures adopted to tackle the downturn and strengthen their investors’ morale. This can be best supported by a sustained PR plan. In the retail space, a similar mapping can be drawn between, say, Total Hypermarket and its parent company Jubilant Organosys, respectively. In the tech space, too, a similar mapping can be seen between, say, Compaq laptops and HP, the parent company Microsoft MCITP Certification.

Get MCTS Certified In 7 Days

Get MCTS Certified In 7 Days
Like over 800,000 other people, I spent an incredible amount of time and effort studying to be an MCTS (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer). I took six classes, studied several books from cover to cover, took practice tests and used the knowledge in my job and on my own time. Why did I do all of this? Because I wanted to have one of the most prestigious certifications in the field - the MCSE!

Recently, I found a site providing MCITP Certification consultation service which can help us get certified more conveniently. They offer online consultation and solution for I.T certifications such as MCTS certification, Cisco certification, CompTIA A+ and many more!
The best part about service is that you can begin from your own home and at your own pace. We are dedicated to providing I.T professionals with the highest level of certification solutions and certification materials that the industry has to offer.
No matter how busy you are or how competent you are at this moment they will get you certified in 7 days or you can receive a 200% refund, which it is the highest in the industry.
My opinion on MCTS certification:
For those of you who don't know, the MCTS consisted of six tests designed to ensure that system administrators meet a minimum level of experience and knowledge with Microsoft products. The concept is this gives guidance to managers as to who they should and should not hire, and ensures that those people know how to use Microsoft products.

In my experience, people who honestly pass the MCTS Training are indeed better qualified for their positions than others with equivalent experience and skills. Of course, boot camps, brain dumps and similar methods of cheating the process tend to allow people to dishonestly pass the exams. This, however, is true with all certifications (and tests for that matter) and not unique to the MCTS series.

In their attempts to get people to upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000, Microsoft has run into quite a bit of resistance from the industry. While there are very significant reasons to upgrade, Windows 2000 requires major changes in network configurations, applications and user training, which has tended to slow acceptance. In addition, since Windows 2000 was released around the time of large expenditures on the Year 2000 bug, system managers found themselves without funds or manpower to upgrade their networks.

Microsoft Pulls Windows 7 For Netbooks Tool

Microsoft Pulls Windows 7 For Netbooks Tool
In a significant development, software giant, Microsoft, has made a decision to pull its Windows 7 for Netbooks downloading tool. This will be enabled from an online store. This step is touted by some analysts in response to accusations that code for the tool was ripped off from a CodePlex-hosted open-source project. The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT), which was the original program, came into being with an intention to help Microsoft MCTS Training make the most out of netbooks' perennial popularity among consumers. The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT) was pulled off from the online Microsoft Store since the program had a code from the GPLv2-licensed ImageMaster project. The USB/DVD Download Tool was earlier brought into being as a method for netbook users, without DVD drives on some of them on their devices, in order to install their machines with Windows 7.

The ImageMaster project is has been intensely described as a .Net C# application for reading and writing disc images. Microsoft MCITP Certification decided to pull the WUDT from the offerings on the Microsoft Store, even though the "Windows 7 for Netbooks" page still tends to be active without an "Add to Cart" link. It can be recalled that WUDT was initially targeted to make porting Windows 7 onto netbooks a simple process. Netbook users sans DVD drivers can be in a tricky situation. For them the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool will click an ISO image and then make a bootable UDB device which can be used to install Windows. Also, users have to configure their netbooks BIOS before it can be booted off that USB device or external DVD player. Even though netbooks are popular Redmond said in public that "ultra-thins" have the potential to do a lot more better and can run higher-margin versions of Windows. It has decided to start introducing ultra-thin PCs although a little expensive than netbooks around the time when the year comes to an end.

Getting Acquainted With Microsoft Access Database

Getting Acquainted With Microsoft Access Database
Once you are done with the entering of valuable data into your database, the next step is to make sure that you can use it as per your requirement. Perhaps you need to filter out a few subsets of that data or collect the sales data over a specific period. Well, such kind of operations can be easily carried out with the help of Microsoft MCTS Training Access Database.
MS Access enables you to create extremely powerful database systems. It is a vital element of MS Office Suite and is being extensively used by millions of home users as well as business owners around the globe.

The Access Databases application offers a rich array of amazing tools. These tools can be used for designing a simple database model as well as a multi-user network version. You can find administrative tools for all levels. Some of the most powerful tools include Access Security Module, Linked Manager Tool, Database Splitter, Relationship Window and many more.

Beginners might find Microsoft Access Software a little overwhelming. This is because of the large number of components and objects present in this application. MS Access includes codes, reports, macros, forms, tables and queries.

Within MS Access, a database is nothing more than a group of different data sets that are referred to as Tables. These tables are potentially interconnected and hence joined together.
Because of the high flexibility and functionality of MS Access, it is very easy for a user to relate and join tables together by using this application. Tables are quite similar to containers, which are used for holding things. Tables are used for holding your valuable information.

Apart from the tables, MS Access offers forms that can be used for presenting the data in an organized manner. Users can make use of forms to type, amend or even remove information. Forms act like screens that can be used for both displaying information from as well as inputting information to the tables Microsoft MCITP Certification.

A query helps you in locating the information that you are looking for. Reports are used for output, which is further sent to the printer. You can also go for a small course that can help you in handling MS Access perfectly.

And, if there is no backup available Microsoft MCTS Training, no need to be disappointed as you can recover lost data with the help of an efficient camera recovery software

Consider a scenario, wherein, you use a FAT 16 formatted SD card in your Z915 camera. When you attempt to add more photos and videos to SD card from your computer, you may come across the following bugging error:

Cannot copy [file]: The directory or file cannot be created.

As a result of the above error, you are unable to transfer the data onto it.

Cause

FAT 16 doesn't support large number of directory entries plus it doesn't even allow long file names. A FAT 16 formatted SD card can hold a maximum of 512 entries in its root directories. The error can surface if the SD card already contains maximum number of files.

Resolution

2)In future, remember not to assign long names to files
3)However, in order to completely resolve the issue, you must re-format the SD card in FAT 32 format. You can then restore the lost data by using the recent backup.

If you don't have a backup, you must acquire a digital camera recovery to retrieve photos and other files from your Kodak Z915 camera's SD card.

Such tools scan the formatted memory card thoroughly and extract data efficiently, irrespective of the type of memory card. Ensure you select a read-only camera recovery tool from the Internet Microsoft MCITP Certification.

If you are planning on writing the Microsoft Certification Exam for 70-652: Configuring Windows Server Virtualization, Microsoft Press has released a self-paced training kit. The Microsoft press books are always well written and are of good quality. I have no doubt this one maintains the status quo. MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-652): Configuring Windows Server Virtualization Book

I was planning on writing this exam over the summer, but with the baby looking like he maybe early, that might hold out until the fall. If I do wait, I might be interested in doing a self study group for this exam. Server Virtualization is something that comes up a lot and is probably a decent exam for a lot of people to write as a base Microsoft MCITP Certification. Virtualization is becoming more popular all the time and the certification exam would be a great asset to have.

Microsoft SharePoint Frustrations

SharePoint Frustrations

In Michael Noel’s article, “5 SharePoint Frustrations You Can Overcome” (April 2010, InstantDoc ID 103567), I read something that I don’t totally agree with. I've seen this error a few times, so I felt the need to comment.

Regarding Noel's "Content Database Management" section, it's possible to use the Central Administration GUI to determine which content database your new site collection will be created in. The solution isn't elegant, but it works for creating site collections in new and existing content databases and doesn't require that you use Stsadm. Follow these steps:

1. In the Application Management section, access the Content Databases link.
2. In the upper right corner, make sure you're in the correct Web Application. If you aren’t, change to the correct one.
3. Click the link for each Content Database you have listed under the Database Name heading.
4. When the Manage Content Database Settings page opens, set the Database Status to Offline, then click OK. The system will take you back to the Manage Content Databases page, where the database you just changed should now appear as Stopped.
5. Click the Add a Content Database link, and create a new content database. Don't make any changes to the Database Status setting. It will appear as Started in the list of Content Databases. You'll also notice that the Current Number of Sites will equal 0.
6. Navigate to the SharePoint Site Management section, and create your new site collection.
7. Return to the Manage Content Databases list, and you'll see that the Content Database you just created now shows that the Current Number of Sites equals 1 Microsoft MCTS Training.

You've just created a new site collection in the content database of your choice. As long as a content database is in the Stopped state, no new site collections can be created within that content database. You can still create sites—or, more accurately, Webs—but not site collections.

If you had 15 content databases in the list, and all were in the Stopped state, and you tried to create a new site collection, SharePoint would throw an error message. Pick the content database you want your new site collection to reside in, set the state to Started, and you'll be able to create the site collection in the database you want MCITP Certification.

SharePoint 2010 and Windows Virtual PC

SharePoint 2010 and Windows Virtual PC
SharePoint 2010
Pros: Somewhat improved UI for admins and users; many functional additions; can host Office Web Applications internally

Cons: 64-bit requirement could shut out smaller shops; doesn't support IE 6

Rating: Four out of five stars

Recommendation: Microsoft’s collaboration and document management server defies simple description. It's a corporate intranet portal solution, a blogging tool, an online document repository, and a knowledge worker collaboration platform all in one, and it's successfully used for public-facing websites. Now it can even host an internal version of Office Web Apps in tandem with Microsoft SQL Server. It works nicely with non-Microsoft browsers but not, go figure, with IE 6. SharePoint is as big and hairy as ever, but the sheer variety of functionality it offers is astonishing Microsoft MCTS Training.

Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode (Update)

Pros: Free, no longer requires hardware virtualization support; XP apps run side-by-side with Win7 apps; many users get a free version of Windows XP to run virtually

Cons: Performance isn't great; not as full-featured as rival virtualization solutions

Rating: Three out of five stars

Recommendation: Microsoft's middle-of-the-road Windows Virtual PC (WVPC) had three things going for it when it was released in late 2009: It was (and still is) free. Users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate got a free, licensed copy of Microsoft MCITP Certification Windows XP to run virtually (XP Mode). And it offered a semi-seamless way to run (virtualized) Windows XP applications side by side with native Windows 7 applications. Fast forward to mid-2010 and WVPC no longer requires virtualization support in the BIOS and CPU of the computer. But you can't run 64-bit OSs virtually, and if you're looking for a good Help desk or developer solution, WVPC doesn't fit the bill. WVPC and XP Mode are what they were last year: Decent but not best in class.
