Google boosts Web bug bounties to $20,000

Increases payments for bugs in core sites, services and Web apps

Computerworld - Google today dramatically raised the bounties it pays independent researchers for reporting bugs in its core websites, services and online applications.

The search giant boosted the maximum reward from $3,133 to $20,000, and added a $10,000 payment to the program.

The Vulnerability Reward Program (VRP) will now pay $20,000 for vulnerabilities that allow remote code execution against google.com, youtube.com and other core domains, as well as what the company called "highly sensitive services" such as its search site, Google Wallet, Gmail and Google Play.

Remote code flaws found in Google's Web apps will also be rewarded $20,000.

The term "remote code execution" refers to the most serious category of vulnerabilities, those which when exploited allow an attacker to hijack a system and/or plant malware on a machine.

A $10,000 bounty will be paid for SQL injection bugs or "significant" authentication bypass or data leak vulnerabilities, Google said in the revised rules for the program.

Other bugs, including cross-site scripting (XSS) and cross-site request forgery (XSRF) flaws, will be compensated with payments between $100 and $3,133, with the amount dependent on the severity of the bug and where the vulnerability resides.

Google explained the higher bounties as ways "to celebrate the success of this [program] and to underscore our commitment to security."

The website and web app reward program debuted in November 2010, and followed Google's January 2010 launch of a bug bounty program for its Chrome browser. Google paid out about $180,000 in Chrome bounties last year.

The maximum award for reported Chrome vulnerabilities remains at $3,133, Google confirmed today.

Since VRP's introduction, Google today said it has received more than 780 eligible bug reports, and in just over a year, paid out around $460,000 to approximately 200 researchers.

"We're confident beyond any doubt the program has made Google users safer," said Adam Mein, a Google security program manager, and Michal Zalewski, a engineer on the Google security team, in a Monday post to a company blog.

Google has shown that upping bounty payments will shake loose vulnerabilities it wasn't aware existed.

Last month, the company wrote $60,000 checks to two researchers at Pwnium, the Chrome hacking contest it ran at the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Both researchers revealed bugs and associated attack code that demonstrated how hackers could escape the browser's isolating, anti-exploit "sandbox, to hijack the browser and plant malware on a machine.

Using SQL Server Integration Services to import data from MySQL to SQL Server

Here are the steps to create the SSIS project:

Start SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio and start an Integration Service Project.

Create a new project and select Integration Services Project.

In the toolbox drag and drop the Data flow task onto the design surface of the Control Flow tab.

Double click in the Data Flow task in the Design pane.

In the Data Flow tab, drag and drop the ADO.NET Source and ADO.NET Destination to the design pane, join both tasks with the green arrow.

Go to Windows start menu | Administrative tools | Data Sources (ODBC) and click the Add button.

Select the MySQL ODBC driver and press Finish. Please note this driver is installed with the connector specified in the prerequisites section above.

Specify the Data Source Name. e.g. "MySQL conn".

Specify the TCP/IP Server. It can be the IP or the localhost if the machine used is the local machine.

Specify the user, in this case root and the password. Ask to the MySQL administrator if you do not know the user database password).

Select the MySQL database.

Congratulations! You have a ODBC connection. Now let's use it in SSIS and return to the SSIS project.

Double click in the ADO Net Source and press the new button.

Press the new button again to add a connection.

This is important, in the provider, select the .NET Providers\ODBC Data Provider. The ODBC connection will be displayed. Select the connection created in step 8 and press OK.

In the ADO.NET source editor, in Data access mode, select SQL Command.

In the SQL command test, write "select * from myTable" and press OK. In this step you are writing the query to access to MySQL table created at the beginning.

Double click in the ADO.NET Destination task and in the Connection manager press New.

In the Configure ADO.NET Connection Manager press new again.

In the connection manager specify the SQL Server instance name (in this example the localhost is a dot) and select a Database where you want to import the MySQL Database and press OK. In this example the Adventureworks database is used, but any database can be used instead.

In the ADO.NET Destination Editor, click new in the Use a table or view option.

In the Create Table box, use this code:

Microsoft remains mum on Windows 8 upgrades from Vista, XP

Computerworld - Microsoft today declined to confirm whether users of Windows XP and Vista will be able to upgrade their PCs to Windows 8 when the latter launches later this year.

On Monday, Microsoft spelled out the editions it would offer customers working with 32- and 64-bit Intel and AMD processor-powered PCs and tablets.

In that blog post, the company also noted the upgrade paths to Windows 8 for existing machines, saying that people now running Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic or Home Premium could upgrade to the consumer-oriented Windows 8. Systems running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate will be upgradable to Windows 8 Pro.

Although Microsoft did not specify the upgrade path for customers currently running Windows 7 Enterprise, the assumption is that they will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise, which, like its predecessor, will be distributed only to companies with Software Assurance upgrade agreements.

The omission of the problem-plagued Vista and the nearly 11-year-old XP from Microsoft's explicit upgrade path seemed odd: In February, the company used an FAQ to plainly state that users of those OSes could upgrade to Windows 8's beta, tagged "Consumer Preview."

"You can upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview from Windows Developer Preview, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP," the FAQ stated, "but you might not be able to keep all of your files, programs and settings."

Developer Preview was Microsoft's name for the first public sneak peak at Windows 8 as a work-in-progress, and was issued last September.

In the FAQ, Microsoft said that Vista users who upgraded would retain user accounts and files, as well as Windows settings. XP-to-Windows 8 upgrades would only preserve user accounts and files. Windows 7-to-Windows 8 upgrades, meanwhile, conserved not only user accounts, data files and Windows settings, but also already-installed applications in the move.

Ironically, migrating from Windows 7 is more thorough than from Windows 8's own Developer Preview, which will retain only as much information as an XP-to-Windows 8 transfer.

When asked today whether Vista and XP users would be able to upgrade to Windows 8 RTM, or "release to manufacturing" -- the label used to designate the final code -- as they were allowed in the Consumer Preview, a Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment. "[We have] no information to share outside of what's in the blog," she said in an email.

It's possible Microsoft was using a narrow definition of "upgrade" in the Monday blog that confirmed only Windows 7-to-Windows 8 paths, one that included application migration as well as that for files and settings.

Previously, that kind of upgrade has been called "in-place," or one that leaves everything undisturbed as it swaps out the old OS for the new.

If Vista and XP get the cold shoulder, it wouldn't be the first time.

Three years ago, Microsoft offered an in-place upgrade to Windows 7 to users running Vista, but gave XP customers only the option of what it called a "custom" install -- others pegged it as a "clean" install -- that deleted all data on the hard drive before installing the then-new operating system.

It may seem foolish to exclude XP users from a possible Windows 8 upgrade since that 2001 edition powered 51% of all Windows PCs that went online last month, according to metrics company Net Applications. Vista accounted for another 8% of all Windows editions.

But the aged hardware running XP may be the hurdle Windows 8 can't jump: Microsoft has repeatedly said that PCs able to run Windows 7 will be able to run the new OS, but the system requirements it outlined for the Consumer Preview -- a 1GHz processor, 1GB of memory and a graphics card able to handle DirectX 9 or later -- may preclude many older machines.

Microsoft has not yet revealed the pricing for Windows 8's upgrades, or described how they will be distributed.

While Windows 7's upgrade in 2009 was handled much the same as always, Microsoft debuted a new strategy with Office 2010 when it dropped upgrade pricing -- a move that effectively raised costs for users of earlier editions of the suite -- and launched single-license "key cards" that carried only an activation code.

According to one analyst, Microsoft is unlikely to follow Apple's lead and offer Windows 8 upgrades only through its online channels, which could include Windows Store, the software market designed for Windows 8. Microsoft has not said whether Windows 7 users will be able to access that e-store.

Microsoft: Six versions of Windows 7 for sake of PC makers, users

Analyst differs, saying it has more to do with improving profit margins in developed countries

Computerworld - While it plans to focus on marketing two versions of Windows 7, Microsoft Corp. will offer six editions of its next operating system to better satisfy PC makers and end users, an executive said Tuesday.

"We did a lot of research and talked to a lot of [hardware] partners and customers," Mike Ybarra, general manager for Windows, told Computerworld following the versions announcement today.

"Our biggest challenge is that we have over 1 billion customers," Ybarra said. "It's hard to satisfy all of them [with a single version]. There are vocal customers who want every feature, and more regular consumers who say 'I want a version that can grow with me.'"

Microsoft said today that it will aim Windows 7 Home Premium at the majority of consumers and Windows 7 Professional at businesses. That harks back to Windows XP, which had two main SKUs: Home and Professional.

However, Microsoft will maintain all of the four other versions it offered with Vista, including the controversial Home Basic, the Starter Edition that was until now restricted to developing countries, Enterprise and Ultimate. That "SKU proliferation" confused many consumers and corporate customers.

Meanwhile, Apple Inc. releases a single version of Mac OS X with every new release. It does have far fewer users than Windows, with some estimates claiming between 30 million to 50 million users worldwide today.

Matt Rosoff, an analyst at the independent firm Directions on Microsoft, said that keeping the number of versions high is all part of Microsoft's attempt to segment the market and "maintain the average-price-per-unit of Windows sales in developed countries to counteract the effects of price pressure in developing countries, where most growth is happening."

Rosoff thinks Microsoft's rejiggered lineup is "simpler" for consumers, but remains too complicated for businesses, which will have to "check the feature list carefully" in order to choose between Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate.

Microsoft did consider cutting Ultimate, a pricy, fully loaded version that in Windows Vista was aimed at gamers and enthusiasts.

"We're keeping it because a lot of top [PC makers] wanted it in order to let them differentiate their own hardware," Ybarra said.

Windows 7 Ultimate won't have any unique multimedia features, but it will share the same advanced networking and security features as Windows 7 Enterprise, which is available to large corporations through volume licensing, Ybarra said.

Rosoff expects Ultimate to be embraced by businesses rather than enthusiasts, because they will seek to avoid locking themselves into a multiyear license agreement as is required by the Enterprise version.

Rather than cutting Home Basic altogether, Microsoft chose to sell it only in developing markets, where very cheap PCs are in demand, Ybarra said. "[PC makers] need to hit multiple price points: good, better and best," he said.

Windows 7 Starter Edition is even more limited than Home Basic, allowing users to open only a maximum of three applications at any given time. "We felt that was the right way to go," Ybarra said, as this version will be aimed at new PC users.

While Microsoft is making Windows 7 Starter Edition available for netbooks worldwide, Ybarra expects the majority of PC makers to pre-install Windows 7 Home Premium anyway.

Rosoff agrees, saying that PCs shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium will likely cost about $50 more than those with Starter.

"On a $500 PC, I don't think customers will balk at paying an extra $50 for not having limitations such as the ability to open only three apps simultaneously," Rosoff said. "On a $200 PC (should such a thing ever emerge), that $50 might be a harder sell," Rosoff said in an e-mail.

Ybarra declined to disclose prices for any of the versions. He also declined to say how many "N" versions of Windows 7, which lack Windows Media Player as per European Union rules, Microsoft will release in Europe.

He promised that users would be able to perform Windows Anytime Upgrades even more quickly with Windows 7 than with Vista. In Vista, users would pay at Microsoft's Web site to get a license key and then re-insert their Vista DVD to physically install the upgrade on the hard drive.

With Windows 7, all versions are already installed on the user's PC hard drive, meaning he pays and then "simply unlocks the features," Ybarra said. Total upgrade time should be between seven and 10 minutes, he added.

Except for Starter, which will come in 32-bit only, all flavors of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, Ybarra said.

He added that Microsoft has no plans to release any more versions of Windows 7 after its initial release, as occurred with XP.

Email phishing scams have grown more sophisticated since they first began popping up in corporate inboxes in the 1990s. Early phishing emails were relatively easy to detect as they were characterized by poor grammar and spelling. No legitimate business would send an email to customers chockfull of typos.

FBI warns of phishing scam

As email users grew wary of phishing attempts, cybercriminals have had to change their tactics and their lures. Today, phishers are churning out much more convincing and effective emails. Not only are the most persuasive specimens well-written, they are also often personalized, addressing the recipient by name. In addition, they replicate the look and feel of authentic emails from legitimate businesses down to the fonts, footers, logos and copyright statements those companies use in electronic correspondence with their customers.

Why Criminals Keep Casting Phishing Lines

The result of these refinements has been an explosion in phishing attempts. In 2011, approximately one out of every 300 emails circulating the web was deemed to contain elements indicative of phishing, according to "The Year in Phishing," a report from RSA. The cumulative number of phishing attacks recorded that year was 279,580, a 37 percent increase over 2010, by RSA's count.

RSA says that phishing attacks are on the rise despite heightened user awareness in part because they've become so easy for cybercriminals to execute. Malware writers have created automated toolkits that fraudsters use to easily create and host phishing pages. On average, every phishing attack nets a $4,500 profit in stolen funds for the perpetrator, according to RSA.

Because phishing attacks are easier for cybercriminals to produce and more convincing than ever, RSA predicts even more of them in 2012. To help you and your end-users determine whether those suspicious emails in your inboxes are legitimate or phishing scams, CIO.com asked Daniel Peck, a research scientist with Barracuda Networks, a provider of email and web security products, to analyze a particularly convincing specimen allegedly from American Express. We include below a copy of the email in question, along with Peck's tips for discerning the validity of suspicious emails.

This email is, in fact, a phishing scam, but it's convincing for a variety of reasons. For one, it sounds authoritative. Second, the footer--with its putative links to American Express Customer Service and the company's privacy statement--makes it look authentic. The message at the end of the footer that reads, "Your Cardmember information is included in the upper-right corner to help you recognize this as a customer service e-mail from American Express. To learn more about e-mail security or report a suspicious e-mail, please visit us at americanexpress.com/phishing," makes it look even more authentic and is designed to further confuse the recipient. Finally, because the message assumes the recipient did not recently charge a Hilton Hotel reservation, it attempts to win the recipient's trust, as if to say, "We're looking out for you."

Five Ways to Catch a Phish

With all of these convincing elements designed to spoof legitimate emails and confuse recipients, how can email users be sure messages like this one are fake? Here are five tips.

1. Hover. Whatever you do, don't click on any of the links in the email, says Peck. You can and should, however, point your mouse at them and hover over them.

When we hover over the "Secure Online Chat" and "www.americanexpress.com/case" links, we see that those links don't direct to the americanexpress.com domain. One directs to a website in Italy, as marked by the .it domain. The other points to a .us domain. Links that don't go to the legitimate domain of the business are telltale signs of phishing emails.

2. Copy and paste. If you can't see the URL where the links direct when you hover over them, Peck suggests copying and pasting the link into a Microsoft Word document. Right click on the pasted link and select "Edit Hyperlink" from the menu that appears. Selecting "Edit Hyperlink" will open a pop-up window in Word that shows in the "Address" field the web address to which the link directs.

3. Investigate the email's properties. Outlook users who have opened the suspicious email can go to the "File" tab and select "Properties." In the "Properties" pop-up window that appears, Peck says to look at the box at the bottom of the window labeled "Internet headers." This box shows the path the email took to reach the end-user, he says. "Look at the originating systems. If they're not from American Express, Constant Contact or other trusted email blast systems, those are tipoffs that it's a phishing email," he adds.

4. Act on information that you know for sure is trustworthy. If your bank or credit card company is sending you an email regarding a fraud alert, you ought to see that same fraud alert on your bank or credit card company's legitimate website, says Peck. If you're at all uncertain, Peck recommends calling the phone number on the back of your credit card. "Always work on information that you have a lot more reason to trust," he adds.

5. When in doubt, throw it out. The best defense against phishing scams, Peck says, is to assume the email is untrustworthy and to pursue direct channels to businesses that you trust, such as your bank's 1-800 number.

Leaked Microsoft roadmap shows 2013 launch for Office 15

Microsoft needs to better communicate plans to developers, enterprises and customers, says analyst


Computerworld - A leaked Microsoft roadmap shows that the next version of Office won't ship until the first quarter of 2013, according to the Dutch developer who found the document.

Maarten Visser, the CEO of Meetroo and a decade-long Microsoft partner, stumbled upon the roadmap a week ago after clicking on a link posted on Microsoft's Dutch website. The PDF was not password protected.

"I'm always curious about the roadmaps," said Visser in a YouTube video he posted yesterday. "For me, since we build SharePoint applications, the release of SharePoint 15 is an important thing. The better I know when this will happen, the better I will be to ready my products before launch."

Visser's Meetroo is building project management software that relies on SharePoint.

While Visser noted that much of the information in the roadmap was already known -- that Microsoft will release a public beta of Office alongside betas of supporting products like SharePoint and Exchange -- he pointed out that the document pegged the suite's final release as the first quarter of 2013.

The roadmap's date for the public beta, however, doesn't jibe with Microsoft's recent comments.

On the roadmap, the Office beta was marked as smack-dab between the third and fourth quarters. While Microsoft has not yet revealed a detailed timetable for Office, two months ago the executive who runs the Office group, P.J. Hough, said "Everyone will have the opportunity to try the Office 15 public beta later this summer."

To meet Hough's "summer" promise, the beta would have to appear in the stretch between late in the second quarter and near the end of the third.

Microsoft has not assigned the next Office an official name, but has used "Office 15" as a placeholder. The roadmap used the same label.

Another section of the roadmap showed timelines for Windows -- both client and server editions -- as well as Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) and Windows Phone.

Windows 8's schedule was bare, with only last September's Developer Preview marked, and others, including Windows Server 8 -- which is expected to launch at the same time as the client editions -- simply showing a label of "Historical Release Cadence" that stretched from mid-2012 through early 2013.

Most experts anticipate a formal release of Windows 8 -- at least the desktop version -- in the fourth quarter, possibly October, because they assume Microsoft wants new Windows 8 PCs on shelves during this year's holiday sales season.

IE10's launch was marked as some time in the second half of 2012.

One analyst said the roadmap demonstrated just how opaque Microsoft is when it comes to disseminating information to customers. "Not only do ISVs [independent software vendors] and corporations need to know release dates, but as a customer, you need to know them, too," said Michael Cherry of Directions on Microsoft.

"Everyone needs a timeline that's dependable, but it's not enough to just give us dates," Cherry said, referring to the leaked document. "You have to give us descriptions why those dates are what they are."

That's something that Microsoft doesn't do early enough in its development process, Cherry said, making it nearly impossible for software makers like Visser, companies that craft their own applications for internal use, and customers -- especially enterprises -- to make intelligent decisions on developing for a new platform or migrating to it.

Cherry argued that a reliable timeline was more important for an operating system than for an application like Office, big as the latter is to Microsoft's revenue, because fewer partners work with Office than with Windows.

"For an OS like Windows, especially WOA [Windows on ARM], I'm kind of stunned at the lack of information available at this point," Cherry said. "There are a lot of people who need to be aware of the changes in Windows and WOA."

Directions on Microsoft creates detailed roadmaps for its clients, but the job is neither simple or easy.

"It's very hard to do, to represent [a roadmap] well," said Cherry, adding that it's necessary to show dependencies between products -- how Internet Explorer relies on Windows, for instance -- and timelines that include older products for those rare times when Microsoft takes features from a new edition and backports them to a predecessor.

Cherry highlighted the roadmap's Office 15 launch in early 2013 as another example of dependency. If Office won't be available until then, Cherry was skeptical of a WOA launch in 2012, what with Microsoft having stressed the importance of Office on that tablet-oriented OS.

"Apple can be secretive because they build the hardware," Cherry said. "The more you control the ecosystem, the more closed you can be. But I've always thought of Windows as open."

Microsoft declined to comment today on the roadmap that Visser uncovered.

Hitachi's former disk-drive division today announced what it said it the first enterprise-class 4TB hard disk drive.

Hitachi execs plead guilty to price fixing

The drive has a greater areal density that offers 33% more capacity in the same 3.5-inch form factor at 24% lower watts-per-gigabyte than its predecessor.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST), now owned by Western Digital , introduced the new Ultrastar 7K4000 line, which uses the new 512e Advanced Format.

The industry as a whole is moving to the Advanced Format standard because 4KB sectors on hard drives offer higher capacities and addresses current technological limitations with 512-byte sectors in some OSes, such as Windows XP. Laptop drives, or 2.5-in hard drives, adopted the 512e Advanced Format in 2010.
