The "Social Network" Of 2010
It is easy to forecast far into the future, as it gives licence to the imagination! Such predictions, however, do not have much of an immediate impact. Short-term forecasts, on the other hand, are far more helpful for decision-makers to align their current moves. Unfortunately, making such predictions is not easy and comes with its own responsibilities. This was the challenge we threw at experts this month, to tell us what social networking (SN) would be like in 2010. Which media and tools would gain ground, what forms would social networking take, and what would it be used for? Here is a summary of their views...
Social networking as a 'technology'
Social Networking 1.0 focused on establishing virtual connections between people, creating 'Social Graphs'. The last few years have seen the emergence of Social Networking 2.0, where the priority has shifted from the connections between people to content. We have seen the emergence of rich media sharing, RSS feeds, digital whiteboards, custom application programming interfaces (APIs), podcasts, etc.
Romit Dasgupta, director, India Konnects, says Social Networking 3.0 would see social networking being used as a technology (SNT) rather than as a product or a service. "The future of social networks would see custom tools (APIs) being built for networks of specific interest groups. For example, a business networking portal like Konnects.com might have a business lead-generation tool whereas a Shelfari.com, which is a social network for book lovers, might include a tool to track authors and their recent releases. So, new features would mostly be added on in the form of custom APIs MCITP Training."
A segmented world
Dasgupta feels that the users of 2010 would follow a segmented approach to social networking. "I see services like Ning dominating the social market space whereas services like LinkedIn or Konnects would dominate the professional networking space. Portals like Facebook, Orkut and MySpace would still have a decent market share because of the volume of their registered users," he says MCTS Training.
When you look deeper, even these broad-based SN sites thrive on segmentation. For instance, Facebook organises networks according to city, workplace, school, and region. Members can interact by sending messages to one another. Users can be members of multiple networks and even have access to their friends; profiles. By understanding that all these people have a common objective, like their place of education, they are better placed to provide a more successful and proficient service to the user.

Microsoft Releases Office 2010
Microsoft on Tuesday took the beta tags off its latest office suite and formally unveiled Office 2010, Visio 2010, and Project 2010.
The product is now available at 35,000 retail stores like Best Buy or online at Amazon.com, and can also be purchased pre-loaded on a variety of PCs.
"Working with major retail partners and PC makers, we've made dramatic changes in the way we deliver Office 2010 to give consumers more buying choice, making it easier than ever to unlock the power of Office on new and existing PCs," Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft's Business Division, said in a statement. "For the first time, people can purchase a Product Key Card at retail to activate Office 2010 preloaded on new PCs. For those who want to download Office 2010 direct from Office.com for an existing PC, the new Click-to-Run technology will have them up and running in a matter of minutes."

Office 2010 is being released in 10 languages, which will eventually expand to 94.

Office Home and Business, which also includes Outlook, will retail for $279.99. Office Professional 2010, meanwhile, which also incorporates Publisher and Access, will cost $499.99.
You can opt to download the program directly to your PC, download and purchase a backup disc for $14.95, or purchase the physical software.
Microsoft released a beta version of Office 2010 in late 2009, and that program has since been downloaded more than 9 million times, the company said Tuesday. That's more than six times the size of the 2007 Microsoft Office beta release MCTS Training.
"Following the great response to the Office 2010 beta and the success of Windows 7, we predict this will be the biggest consumer release of Office, ever," Elop said.

Microsoft has launched an IT apprenticeship scheme which could see thousands of young people employed at the software giant's partner and customer companies.
In the coming weeks 100 young people will start on seven-month apprenticeship courses. The company hopes 3,000 people will eventually sign up to the scheme, which will run for three years.
Apprentices work one day a week for a company and learn technical support skills for the rest of the week. The company pays them a wage and employs them at the end, but the training is funded by the government MCTS Training.
Stephen Uden, head of skills at Microsoft UK, said this was part of the reason why the company wanted to get behind apprenticeships.
"The government spends about £3bn a year on training, but so far not much of that has come to the technology industry.
"So we worked with our partner organisations and customers to develop an apprenticeship scheme. Apprentices get both the apprentice qualification but also a Microsoft vendor qualification."
Microsoft has mainly played a facilitating role, matching interested employees with companies which needed them. It is also lending its brand name to the project, with Uden saying, "We employ about 3,000 people in the UK and our partner companies employ around half a million. But a lot of them don't have well-known names, so our name and reputation give young people confidence because they recognise it."
He said the company would stay in touch with apprentices, keeping their contact details and inviting them to its offices "from time to time". Former head of the CBI Lord Digby Jones would also be mentoring some apprentices.
Uden said apprentices would also have the chance to develop their skills further if they wanted to, going on to study foundation degrees and possibly degrees. About 70% of jobs in the IT industry require graduate-level skills.
The current apprenticeships on offer are in technical support, although companies have shown interest in developing schemes for technical sales and software development. Microsoft said it would be open to developing other types of schemes if companies want them MCITP Certification.
After three years the scheme will end although the company said it hoped knowledge of apprenticeships in the IT industry would spread through word of mouth, and become self-sustaining. "Hopefully, more IT employers will see this is a good way of recruiting new talent," Uden said.

Businesses that want to stick with Windows XP can buy Microsoft Vista, which allows them downgrade Vista to Windows XP, providing they still have a copy of the original Windows XP CD-ROM.
Windows XP may not support modern hardware, which means businesses will need to continue running older PC hardware, and so miss out on recent performance and energy efficiency developments.
Desktop virtualisation using software such as XenServer from Citrix or VMware, may be one way forward.
"Citrix users can preserve older operating systems and applications. Virtualisation provides a way to deal with the Vista incompatibility problem by allowing users to defer upgrades as necessary." said Dale Vile, managing director of IT analyst Freeform Dynamics MCITP Training.
