Microsoft announces new hardware for Windows 8

The new mice and keyboard will be released around the time of the Windows 8 launch

Microsoft on Monday announced new keyboards and mice optimized for tablets and laptops running the Windows 8 operating system.

The new devices are lighter and more mobile, and will work with tablets running the latest versions of Windows 8 and RT, which are due for release on Oct. 26. The new mice and keyboards are wireless and connect to devices using Bluetooth, cutting the dependence on USB ports.

Microsoft's new mice and keyboard will be released around the time of the Windows 8 launch, Microsoft said in a statement. The company will release its Surface tablet with Windows at around the same time.

The $79.95 Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard is a full-size keyboard designed for tablet users, and has specific hot keys for Windows 8 that provide quick access to search, system settings and the Metro user-interface in the Windows 8 OS. It uses Bluetooth to communicate and comes with a cover that when used turns off the keyboard to increase battery life. The cover can be used as a tablet stand, as well.

The $49.95 Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Keyboard, has a six-degree curve, much like Microsoft's ergonomic keyboards. The keyboard has many of the specific Windows 8 hotkeys, and offers 10 months of battery life on active usage.

Earlier this year, Microsoft's Hardware division announced that the Touch Mouse would get updated to include new touch functionality specifically designed for Windows 8, including support new gestures that will help make navigating easier.

The Microsoft Sculpt Touch Mouse, also priced at $49.95, has a four-way touch scroll strip, which makes it easier to navigate through the Windows 8 start screen. By swiping the finger on the panel, users can easily navigate through multiple panels on the Start screen. The mouse also enables easier navigation through documents. Similarly, the $79.95 Microsoft Touch Mouse incorporates finger swipes and movements to navigate screens, switch applications or zoom in and out.

The $69.95 Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse can shut down when a tablet goes into sleep mode, extending the battery life of the mouse. It is smaller than a traditional mouse, and is designed for mobile use as it can fit into a pocket and work on any surface. The device provides "four-way" touch scrolling, Microsoft said.

The new accessories will work with devices based on Intel processors, and also with Windows RT devices based on ARM processors. The new keyboards and mice are also compatible with Windows 7, Vista and Mac OS, though some advanced features may not work, according to Microsoft.

10 Technologies That Changed Business Forever

The applications, devices and services that have changed the way we do business often started as small-scale alternatives to the status quo. Now we can't survive without them.

Remember when you first saw the iPhone? Glimmering like a rare jewel at the Apple store, the debut model was originally dismissed as a bit player in the enterprise, especially compared to the (ahem) BlackBerry. Now, just about every high-ranking corporate official, not to mention pre-teen, has one in his or her pocket.

What other technology, gadgets and enterprise services have changed business in such a dramatic way? For most IT leaders, there's a good chance a CRM tool or even a seemingly minor Web technology such as OAuth made more waves over the long term. These innovations caused a sea change of their own. In fact, we're trying to figure out how anyone ran a company without them.

1. The LAMP Stack
Here's an innovation you won't hear about in an ad during the Summer Olympics. The LAMP Stack—Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP—is a bundle of free open source tools for Web development and deployment. Jordan Hudgens, a software engineer for MCW Services, says LAMP was groundbreaking because of its low deployment costs. That makes sense—before LAMP, companies would have to hire a disparate group of engineers, many of them using the .NET Framework, and license technology from Oracle and Microsoft.

2. SalesForce.com
Salesforce.com had some serious competition when it debuted in 1999—namely from existing CRM systems running in on-premises data centers. Times have changed. In Q4 of 2011 alone, the site processed 45 billion customer transactions. There are now 100,000 customers worldwide. What's the secret? One answer is offering a scalable product that provides such a global view into customer data. One recent example: NBC Universal uses the system to manage its custom marketing efforts.

3. Adobe PDF
We tend to take ground-breaking tech like Adobe PDF for granted. After all, the portable document formats are amazingly prevalent on the Web, and you can create files easily using tools such as CutePDF. There are now about 150 million PDF docs on the Web today, according to Adobe. They work on just about every computing platform and mobile device, and recent advances in e-signatures—namely, typing a password to protect documents—have made the standard viable in the banking and finance sectors.

4. Bluetooth
The fact that you can connect your smartphone to your car radio is proof enough that Bluetooth has made a big impact across many industries and is still growing. Recent improvements, such as a low-power version that works with heart monitors and better audio quality in Bluetooth 4.0, mean this short-range wireless signal will be around for a while. And there's a new trend: Bluetooth might even move into the financial sector. Intuit, for example, now makes a credit card reader that connects to your smartphone over Blouetooth.

5. Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is one of the most important enterprise innovations of the past 20 years. Mobile users can now work remotely from anywhere, use Internet telephones, tap into wireless printers and, thanks to the emerging 802.11ac standard, exchange files over a network at Gigabit speeds. John Riordan, CTO of OnSIP says Wi-Fi is largely a success because standards developed quickly, keeping pace with enterprise demands, and how the FCC opened the airwaves so high-speed communication could work.

6. E-Printing
You might not know this, but e-printing is finally hitting the mainstream. Corporate workers have known about enterprise-grade e-printing for some time. Now, desktop models such as the HP Officejet 6700 let you print by sending the jobs to an email address. Even Google is involved; users can send print jobs to the Google Cloud Print, where jobs are then transmitted to your printer. The main advantage is flexibility. You can print from home or from a mobile device and expect the copies to be ready and waiting when you get to the office—as long as someone remembered to load paper.

7. VPN
The virtual private network is now a fixture of every data center, but that was not always the case. In the early days of computing, enterprise workers would tap in using unsecure lines from home. Then the corporate world started using firewalls to protect against criminal hacking. Alan Lepofsky, vice president and principal analyst at Constellation Research, says VPN connections have had a major impact on business—lower travel costs, more freedom to work at home, and even a way to have smaller corporate offices.

8. Multi-Core Processors
There was a time when the CPU in a server or desktop computer could only handle one computing chore at a time. Intel introduced multi-core processors to the masses. The impact goes well-beyond being able to run an HD video in the background while you check your e-mail. Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group, says multi-core paved the way for legitimate multi-tasking. Important apps such as virus scanners suddenly became more viable, he says, because the processes did not inhibit the CPU.

9. Amazon Web Services
It might not seem obvious, but some of the most famous companies today rely on Amazon Web Services, a cloud platform for storage and data processing. For example, without AWS there would be no Dropbox. Analyst Rob Enderle says the major benefit is that even very small companies can sign up for these enterprise services and use high-end management features that allow them to scale as they grow.

10. Google Docs
Google is one of the most innovative companies of the last ten years, but one of its crowning achievements for business is not even related to search. Google Docs is now one of the best ways to collaborate, share documents with co-workers and store business information in the cloud. Analyst Rob Enderle says Google Docs helped usher in the age of remote computing, since users could easily post work online and head out for the day. The sea change, it should be pointed out, depended on another major innovation—mobile computing.

Microsoft adding RSS support to Microsoft CRM

Everybody knew it was inevitable that Microsoft would attempt to break into the very profitable CRM market. In 2003 they did just that with Microsoft CRM 1.0. As with all 1.0 Microsoft products it had its problems and that slowed its adoption. The biggest problem that Microsoft had to overcome was that they weren't doing anything new and revolutionary with the product. One of my previous employers had a product in 1999 that did everything that Microsoft CRM did and then some. Since that day Microsoft CRM has come a long way, but the CRM market is one of the tougher ones to stay on top of.

Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Vista are the first two Microsoft products with RSS support built in, but Microsoft isn't stopping there. Microsoft has announced that they will be integrating RSS support into Microsoft CRM. The first thing I thought of when I heard this was "Hey, I can finally get updated price quotes from vendors without having to do a manual update." Apparently Microsoft was thinking along the same lines. Chris Capossela, corporate vice president for the information worker group told PDC attendees that customers or partners of companies who use Dynamics CRM could utilize RSS to receive updates about information, such as price quotes.

We believe RSS will be transformed into a platform that embraces business applications. We see RSS as a great way to publish information to partners, customers and employees.

The decision to include RSS support appears to be a direct response to Spanning Partners new service that provides RSS to Salesforce.com. Last week Steve Ballmer promised Microsoft "would give Salesforce.com a run for its money."

Jean-Philippe Courtois, President of Microsoft International

In the past two years, the number of female Country Managers at Microsoft has nearly doubled with this increased focus on gender diversity in leadership. For our fan page, Jean-Philippe Courtois, President of Microsoft International, has committed to a series of interviews with some of the female Country Managers from around the globe, and this interview with VERONIKA ABOUT HER ROLE AS CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA CLUSTER COUNTRY MANAGER is the eighth in that series. Microsoft operates in more than 140 countries around the world, and in each country, we have a Country Manager who is effectively, the CEO of Microsoft in that market. All of these Country Managers report to Jean-Philippe Courtois who is a big advocate for female diversity.

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST INTERESTING CHALLENGE AND/OR LEARNING AS A CM AT MICROSOFT? In my role, I look after 15 emerging countries in Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia which are all very different both culturally and with regard to business conventions. There are many different religions, traditions and historical contexts. When I started, I felt very challenged to try and understand all these business cultures not to make cultural mistakes. What I learned is that you can’t learn everything. I had to understand the basics, certainly, but then I learned to focus on being authentic and open to learning new things in talking to government officials or customers. They notice and appreciate when you’re trying to be respectful by asking them to advise, rather than trying to be perfect. I learned not to be afraid to not know it all.

Q: WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE ON LEADERSHIP THAT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? As a leader, I recognize that the people I work with are most important for me. One of the best pieces of advice I got early in my career as a manager helped me a lot. My VP told me to always try to hire the best people and to not be afraid to hire people better than me. It’s from those people that you can learn, and in turn, they will help you succeed.

Q: WHAT STRATEGIES DO YOU USE TO AIM FOR A HEALTHY WORK/LIFE BALANCE? With 15 countries to manage, I have a very busy travel schedule so it’s hard! For me, planning is key. I build regular activities into my calendar like tennis games, get-togethers with friends, vacations, and of course health/beauty-related treatments. Tracking the time in my calendar helps me to ensure I have right balance between time for myself, my family, and the business. But… I believe it is very individual, and this works for me.

Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE CONSIDERING A CAREER IN TECHNOLOGY? Technology today is very diverse. It is lot of fun, and it is also about consumers and changing people’s lives, so I believe it is the right place for women to be. My advice would be don’t be afraid of technology and don’t be afraid to take risks! It’s true that information technology is still a male-dominated field, yes, but women bring something unique to this environment. One example is regarding decision making: women tend to be more thoughtful about decisions and that can make a difference in a team.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO WORK AT MICROSOFT? I joined Microsoft 16 years ago as a sales person because for me it was a huge opportunity to learn about advanced business and technology. I am from a post-communist country, so working for an American and international company was a dream come true. Symbolically, for me it represented breaking away from what we “weren’t allowed to learn.” It was freedom.

Q: HOW DOES YOUR ROLE AT MICROSOFT ENABLE YOU TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE WORLD? The countries I cover are emerging markets which really want to succeed. In my role, I am able to help governments to make a difference for their people through technology. One of many examples I am proud of is that we are in the final stages of implementing a government gateway in the Republic of Georgia. This work, which began four years ago with the Government and USAID in Georgia, includes a citizen-facing portal to provide information and valuable citizen services with the click of a mouse. I am amazed to see the results of this type of work across the region, through strategic partnerships with governments, which are producing solutions for citizens that are better than what’s available in some developed countries today.

Finding a Job in a Down Economy: It's Not What You Know, It's Who

Getting a decent job in any economic climate can be an exhausting, ego-crushing task. Not only are you competing with hundreds of talented applicants for one position, but you must also meet strict company requirements. You may still have to jump through some hoops to get a job, but the process has become a bit easier thanks to the Internet.

Today we are in the midst of a very serious economic recession. Hundreds of thousands of talented people have been laid off of their jobs and major corporations have gone under. So why in your right mind would you be out looking for another job right now? Why not just collect unemployment for awhile and ride out the storm? Getting a job may not be as hard as you think. Your favorite social networking site could be the best possible job resource you could ever gain access to.

MySpace, an international site that offers e-mail, a forum, communities, videos and Weblog space to help people stay connected with their friends and family members, now has a job site that allows people to search for employment opportunities based on the industry of their choice. You do not have to be a MySpace member to take advantage of this service. Another added bonus is the "career videos" section at the bottom of the jobs site, which help reduce some of the stress associated with the job hunt.

It is particularly true during tough times, whether you are looking for your next client or business deal or simply trying to find a new job, that it's not what you know, but who you know. Leveraging the power of social networking helps you avoid the anonymity that comes along with submitting your resume for one job opening through an online site.

In addition, social networking allows you to create a relationship with the people who are looking to fill a job position or with friends and colleagues who can otherwise give you an "in."

LinkedIn is another popular social networking site that provides an interconnected network of experienced professionals located all over the world, representing 170 industries and 200 countries. LinkedIn enables you to find, be introduced to, and work with skilled professionals to accomplish your goals.

In order to create a network of trusted contacts, you must be willing to do some research and work. This involves reaching out to former coworkers, former classmates, and colleagues in your industry, fellow alumni and fellow association members.

With online social networks, you gain an easy way to develop and solidify these contacts which will only help your job search. If you need to change industries because of the economy, developing trusted contacts in other industries will significantly ease the transition into a new career.

Online social networks provide an easy way to develop and solidify these contacts which can only help your job search. You just may be able to land your dream job faster by setting yourself apart from the crowd through the opportunities provided through online social networking.

Microsoft Emphasizes Cloud In Certification Program Overhaul

Microsoft Emphasizes Cloud In Certification Program Overhaul
Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) is overhauling its certification program for IT professionals and developers in an effort to address the growth of cloud computing and what the company described as "the growing skills gap" in the IT industry.

The changes generally put more emphasis on IT system planning and design rather than implementation and operation, said Don Field, Microsoft senior director of product management.

"We've increased the skill levels that individuals are required to demonstrate," Field said in an interview. The new certifications reflect "industry shifts that require a broader knowledge base and deeper skills across solutions that cloud computing requires."

And the move will mean changes to partner certifications in the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN) program. Becoming certified under MPN's "competencies" requires that solution providers have a number of sales and technical staffers who have passed certification exams in specific areas such as application integration, content management, and identity and security. But Field said the MPN competencies themselves are not changing.

The new Microsoft Certification Program has three skill levels: Associate, Expert and Master. The new Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate, currently the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, emphasizes skills in software and services implementation.

Microsoft described the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert level as its "flagship credential" because it is the level most will aspire to, according to the company. It's geared toward IT professionals and developers with capabilities in planning, design and infrastructure. Microsoft said the MCSE level particularly requires skills and experience working with public, private and hybrid cloud systems.

The new Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer is the expert-level certification specifically for developers. Requirements for the Master-level certification haven't been set.

MCSEs will need to be re-certified every three years while MCSD re-certification is required every two years, Field said. He added that Microsoft is "not at the point" whether it will offer some kind of alternative to exams for becoming re-certified.

Among the first exams to be offered will be the MCSE for Private Cloud and MCSE for SQL Server 2012. Also in the works are MCSA certifications for Windows Server 2008 and MCSE certifications for data platforms and business intelligence.
